James Removals unpacks new high-spec Volvo FH rigid

James Removals has acquired a Volvo FH 460 Globetrotter XL 6x2 rear-steer rigid.
Supplied by Mark Reeves, Truck Sales Executive at MC Truck & Bus, the new arrival – a like-for-like replacement for a vehicle supplied by a rival marque – was selected following the customer’s positive experience with its first-ever Volvo, which arrived in 2022.

James De-Machen, Owner of James Removals, says: “We’ve added this FH to replace an older model, and the improvement is noticeable across the board. The truck is not only visually impressive but ideally tailored to the kind of work we do. The rear-steer configuration and Globetrotter XL cab have made it a standout addition, particularly for jobs that require a bit more manoeuvrability and driver comfort.

“From the moment our first FM arrived three years ago, it was clear to us that Volvo understands the demands of our industry. Its build quality is exceptional, and the vehicles it supplies handle both short-haul and long-distance work with ease.”

Power is delivered by Volvo’s proven D13K engine, producing 460 hp and 2,300 Nm of torque for excellent driveability and low fuel consumption.

This is paired with a 12-Speed I-Shift automated transmission, which evaluates information about weight, speed, torque demand and road grade to perform every single shift with precision. By constantly communicating with the engine, it adjusts the revs and brake effect for maximum performance.

The truck’s spacious Globetrotter XL cab is kitted out with all the creature comforts required for life on the road. Specified with a Drive+ package, the features include an adjustable steering wheel with neck tilt, electric air conditioning with a carbon filter and sun, mist and air quality sensors, tinted glass roof hatch, plus a TV and a microwave.

Dual armrests, leather upholstery and full air suspension contribute to an exceptionally comfortable driving experience. The build is completed with bodywork by Unique Van Bodies and a custom livery that reflects James Removals’ support for the ABC Book Club charity.

The new Volvo rigid also carries a personal touch, proudly named ‘Elsie Louise’ after James’ first grandchild. This continues a family tradition, with previous trucks bearing the names of his four daughters – including one christened after Elsie’s mum, Louise, who also drives for the business – reflecting James Removals’ strong family heritage.

The business has also been particularly impressed by its local dealer’s proactive support, noting not just the team’s expert assistance but its swiftness from contact to delivery.

“The relationship with Volvo and MC Truck & Bus has been a key part of why we’ve returned for a second vehicle,” adds De-Machen. “There’s a level of trust and reliability there that’s hard to find. The support team is knowledgeable and easy to work with, and they’ve made sure we’re equipped with everything we need.”

The new rigid will primarily operate across the UK five days a week, with occasional journeys into continental Europe. It is expected to cover up to 40,000 kilometres annually and remain part of the customer’s fleet for around ten years.

James Removals was founded in 1996 and operates from 30,000 sq ft headquarters in Blackheath. An established family business, it is recognised as a professional mover throughout London and Kent, plus also carries out home and office removals as far afield as France, Spain and Ireland.
