Lewes District Council’s urban waste collection vehicles go all electric

As with many local authorities across the country, the move is part of Lewes District Council’s commitments on carbon emissions and net-zero goals.

The 4100mm wheelbase eDaily vehicles are powered by three modular batteries, which allow for a range of up to 186 miles – more than exceeding the day-to-day requirements of the vehicles, which cover 10,000 miles annually. The batteries are fitted within the eDaily’s truck-based chassis, meaning no compromise is necessary when it comes to the bodybuild.

Each waste collection unit – supplied by Terberg Matec UK Ltd – is powered by the eDaily’s low voltage ePTO option, removing the need for external batteries or generators, and utilising the full payload capacity. Additionally, a 360-degree camera system, audible reverse alarm, and front-and-rear lighting options maximise safety compliance.

To minimise driver fatigue and strengthen safety in operation, the vehicles are completed with heated and adjustable electric mirrors, a suspended driver’s comfort seat, front fog lamps, and a 10” infotainment system with navigation capabilities.

Lewes District Council worked closely with Northern Commercials to ensure the specifications of the vehicle maximised safety, productivity, and total cost of ownership. The eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty give peace of mind, while an R&M contract and 24-hour servicing ensures maximum uptime.

Mike Cutts, Business Line Director Full Range UK & RIO at IVECO UK, said: “This fleet is a prime example of the DNA baked into the IVECO eDaily, which is decarbonising fleets without compromising on functionality. Congratulations to Lewes District Council and Northern Commercials on these mission-ready vehicles.”

These vehicles also won the 2025 IVECO Mission Award in the “Grounds Maintenance and Waste Management” category.
