As commercial vehicles transition into the era of software‑defined architectures, trailer manufacturers face a fundamental regulatory shift. From July 2026, UNECE R156 requires trailer OEMs to assume full accountability for software update governance by implementing a Software Update Management System (SUMS). Trailer manufacturers face a particularly complex challenge: their vehicles integrate software from multiple suppliers, are maintained across decentralized and often independent workshops, and undergo frequent parameter changes — such as brake pressures, lift axle logic, or reference tire pressures — all of which legally qualify as software updates under UNECE R156.
