Kirkby Skips decarbonize fleet with Volvo electric skiploaders

Waste-management firm replaces diesel-powered trucks with five new FE Electric 4x2 rigids

Kirkby Skips have taken delivery of five new Volvo FE Electric 4x2 rigids
LIVERPOOL-based Kirkby Skips Ltd have taken a huge step towards decarbonizing their vehicle fleet by taking delivery of five new Volvo FE Electric 4x2 rigids. The zero-tailpipe emission trucks replace five older diesel units as the forward-thinking business accelerates its sustainability ambitions.

Kirkby Skips have been purchasing Volvos since 2003 and opted to go down the electric route having been hugely impressed with a demonstrator vehicle supplied by local dealer Thomas Hardie Commercials.

‘As a company, we are always looking for ways to reduce our carbon emissions, while also helping our customers achieve their net-zero targets,’ said Peter Groves, director at Kirkby Skips.

‘These new FE Electrics are ideal for our operations. The demonstrator was with us for a week and during that time it showed quite clearly that the range would be no issue, with our daily operations comfortably handled on one charge. The drivers were all very complimentary about the handling and performance, and they are far quieter to drive than the diesels they replace.’

Each Volvo FE Electric is equipped with Boughton Engineering skiploader bodywork, including a sheeting system and remote control. The powertrain consists of two electric motors, generating a peak torque of 850Nm, and a two-speed gearbox, giving the operator a smooth driving experience.

Equipped with three batteries, the FE electric skiploaders offer a distance range of around 200km. Built on a 3,900 mm wheelbase and equipped with full air suspension, the FE rigids benefit from chassis side skirts, an eight-tonne front axle, an 11.5-tonne rear axle, and Dura-Bright alloy wheels.

The Volvo rigid’s day cab (liveried in Volvo Winter White) features two amber LED roof beacon lights and an additional lower window in the passenger door for increased visibility and safety.  Kirky Skips have backed their new electric skiploaders with a Volvo Gold contract to ensure maximum uptime and peace of mind, including proactive monitoring of the batteries and associated components.
